Mr Browne's first precept: We discussed this precept as a class. These are some of the ideas we had about what it might mean:
We also talked about how hard it would be to back down from an argument when you knew you were right just to save the other persons feelings. We decided being kind is not as simple as it sounds and that there are times when it is ok to be right. We came up with the idea that the most important word in this precept is CHOICE. We have a choice in every decision we make, every decision needs to be evaluated but sometimes it is better to choose to be kind rather than right. We always have a choice. During Term 3, we are going to read a really great book called Wonder. We will be practicing our comprehension skills as we read, listen and discuss this book. The first week, we will be learning about the characters, predicting ideas, making connections and visualising. This story is told through the different characters perspectives. August (Auggie) Pullman was born with a facial deformity that prevented him from going to a mainstream school—until now. He’s about to start 5th grade at Beecher Prep, and if you’ve ever been the new kid then you know how hard that can be. The thing is Auggie’s just an ordinary kid, with an extraordinary face. But can he convince his new classmates that he’s just like them, despite appearances? These images all come from the cover or blurb of the book. After reading them, what ideas do you get about the book, the story, the theme, characters or setting?
Can you make a prediction? Good readers predict what they are going to read about using clues such as titles, pictures, diagrams, blurbs, reviews and author messages. Things we talked about/discussed:
We read up to page 14 and found out some things about the main character, August and his family. We also found out that August's family are all normal and that he has never been to school before but he is about to start 5th grade. We started to keep a log of what we know about each character...This is what we have found out so far:
This term we are reading 'Demon Dentist' by David Williams as our class novel. So far we are really enjoying it, it's easy reading and quite funny. We relate to it because most of us hate going to the dentist! Read further for the blurb on the back of the book: Darkness had come to the town. Strange things were happening in the dead of night. Children would put a tooth under their pillow for the tooth fairy, but in the morning they would wake up to find… a dead slug; a live spider; hundreds of earwigs creeping and crawling beneath their pillow. Evil was at work. But who or what was behind it…? |
